Gallery 3 Verticals: Bears

Many people visit Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and never see a bear. When one is spotted near the roads, the event will stop traffic. People stop in the middle of the road and leave their cars—much to the dismay of the park rangers and the rest of the tourists. Tempers can flare!

Black bears and grizzly bears seem to be doing fine. We've had good luck the last couple of years getting photos of a sow and her three cubs in Grand Teton National Park. With little early season rain, the white bark pine trees did not put out as many cones in 2007 and bears seemed to be more scattered in the fall. Likewise, the crop of black hawthorne berries was much less and the black bears fed in other areas of the valley.
