Gallery 4 Verticals: Moose
During the rut, the largest bulls find a few cows and spend part of their day pushing the younger bulls back. By late fall, bulls have already rubbed off most of their velvet, but still find time to thrash around in a low tree or brush.
It is fairly common to see a bull during a Flehmen Reaction—often called a "lip curl". Getting a good, unobstructed shot isn't easy, but you can sometimes anticipate when it is going to happen and move to a favorable spot.
Of course, the bulls get all the attention in the fall. Cows and calves are normally part of the landscape, but the big bulls are the star of the show. By mid-January, the bulls drop their antlers and loose some of their majestic appeal.
