Gallery 5: Wild Mustangs

Some of the horses at the Pryor Mountain National Horse Refuge have blood lines traced back to the Spanish Conquistadors. Few of the other 16 Wyoming Horse Management Areas can say the same. Instead, they are relative newcomers to the regions, possibly dating back to some of the wagon trains and cattle drives. Others may gone wild after escaping from farmers and ranchers over the years.
With this checkered past, the breeds are mixed and diverse. Wyoming BLM web sites list some of the colors as: bay, sorrel, gray, roan, pinto, tobiano paint, brown, black, chestnut, white, buckskin, palomino, blue roan, red roan, strawberry roan, piebald, skewbald bay, & sorrel with flaxen tail & mane.
